Paros car hire: what do excess, deposit and desk extras mean?
Updated October 19, 2026 · 7 min read
The answer before the terminology
Do not choose a Paros hire car from the headline price alone. Open the rental conditions and compare five things first: the excess, the security deposit, what card the main driver must present, the fuel policy and any age or additional-driver charge. There is no honest island-wide figure for any of them; each supplier and car class can set different terms. A cheaper offer is not cheaper if its deposit cannot be authorised at collection or if the drivers you need are not included.
Compare Paros car hire and open each offer’s conditions
Excess and deposit are not the same money
The excess is the part of a covered loss that the rental contract can leave with you. The security deposit is an amount the rental company holds or charges as security for possible costs such as damage, fuel or traffic penalties. They may be related, but one is not a synonym for the other. Read both entries separately.
The booking page shows the applicable conditions for each offer. At collection, the local rental company’s contract governs the handover, so compare it with the voucher before signing. If a number or accepted card type matters to your budget, save the conditions you booked and ask the supplier about any discrepancy at the desk.
What CDW and extra cover actually change
CDW is a damage waiver with exclusions and often an excess; it is not a promise that every scratch, tyre, underside or lost key is covered. A separate reimbursement product may repay eligible charges after documents are submitted, but it does not necessarily remove the desk deposit. Supplier cover sold at collection is another product again. Read who pays first, what evidence is required and which parts of the car are excluded.
Do not accept or reject desk cover because of pressure or a slogan. Match it against the protection already on the voucher. If the supplier says an extra product is compulsory despite you meeting the booked conditions, pause before signing and contact the booking service.
The card can decide whether you receive the car
The named main driver may need to present an accepted physical card in their own name with enough available credit for the deposit. A prepaid booking and a card used online do not prove that the handover requirement is satisfied. Debit cards, virtual cards and another traveller’s card may be treated differently by each supplier. The exact rule belongs in the offer’s rental conditions, not in a general Paros article.
Desk charges worth checking
| Item | Question to answer before payment |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Must it return at the same level, or is fuel prepaid? |
| Additional driver | Is the driver included, and must they attend collection? |
| Young driver | What age band and licence-history rule applies? |
| Child seat | Is the requested type confirmed or only requested? |
| Late collection | How long will the desk hold the booking after the stated time? |
| Ferry use | Is Antiparos permitted in writing? |
An additional driver normally has to meet the same licence and age requirements as the main driver and may need to be present with identification. Never invent a minimum age from another offer: it can change by supplier and vehicle.
The five-minute check
Before booking, take screenshots or save the voucher sections for deposit, excess, card, fuel and driver requirements. At collection, inspect the car and have existing damage recorded. Check the fuel level against the agreement. Keep the signed contract and return record until the deposit has been released.
The practical recommendation is simple: compare the full conditions, not merely the first price on the results screen. Choose the offer whose deposit and cover you understand and can actually meet.
