Which Paros road trip is worth hiring a car for?

Updated October 19, 2026 · 6 min read

A narrow road winding between dry hills and white houses on Paros

The route worth keeping a car for

Drive one focused loop: Parikia to Lefkes, continue through the eastern villages towards the coast, then finish in Naoussa before returning to Parikia. It works because each stop asks for a different kind of time: a slow walk in Lefkes, a flexible beach pause and an evening in Naoussa. A bus can reach several of these places, but combining them without watching the next departure is the reason to rent. Skip the car if you only want Naoussa and Lefkes; both are on the bus network.

Compare small hire cars for Paros

Start with Lefkes, not the beach

Leave after breakfast and make Lefkes the first proper stop. Its lanes reward walking rather than driving through, so use a marked parking area on the edge and enter on foot. Arriving before the hottest part of a summer day makes the climb through the village more pleasant and leaves the coast for later. Do not set a rigid departure time: the point of the vehicle is being able to stay for coffee or shorten the stop if the heat is tiring.

Continue east through the villages rather than doubling back immediately. Choose one beach stop according to wind and the mood of the group. Trying to collect three beaches turns the day into parking and changing clothes. In cooler months the same loop works better as a village-and-lunch day; swimming should not be the timetable’s anchor.

Finish in Naoussa without driving into its centre

Naoussa is the reward at the end, but the car should remain outside the tight centre. Leave the car in a public car park on the edge of town, walk to the harbour and come back on foot. The same applies in Parikia: if your accommodation has no private space, park outside the old streets instead of circling them.

Allow daylight for unfamiliar rural roads, especially when wind, dust or busy summer traffic makes the drive more tiring. A compact car is the useful choice here. A large SUV adds bulk in car parks, while a quad trades away luggage space and weather protection without making village lanes magically spacious.

When the organised tour is better

Do not rent for this loop if nobody enjoys driving, if the group wants local commentary, or if a tasting with wine is part of the day. The English-guided Paros and Antiparos discovery tour lasts 8 hours, starts at €63, has a 4.7 rating from 383 reviews and removes navigation and parking from the decision. It follows a fixed programme, so it is less suitable when the beach stop matters more than the overview.

Do not add Antiparos casually

The ferry is tempting on a map, but it changes the rental question. Some contracts restrict ferry use or require permission. Get written approval from the supplier before taking the car aboard; otherwise cross on foot on a separate day. Adding an island ferry to this loop also steals the unhurried time that makes Lefkes and Naoussa worthwhile.

Verdict

Rent for this route when you want Lefkes, one coast stop and Naoussa on your own rhythm. Keep it to those three chapters, park outside the old centres and choose a small car that fits the luggage. If the driver would spend the day resenting the road, book the guided overview instead.
